Why is Navratri celebrated?

According to lore and legends, there was a demon named Mahishasura who received a boon that he would never be defeated. And so, no God, no human, or no being could defeat him and all of them had to suffer the havoc he caused. But, the boon only mentioned that Mahishasura would remain undefeated by men, and women were left out. And so, Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma came together to create Maa Durga, the fierce Goddess who would kill Mahishasura, be called ‘Mahishasurmardini’, and become the symbol of victory over evil.

Today, we celebrate Navratri to honour Maa Durga, her strength, her protective powers, her motherly love, her different forms, and above all, her mixed character of protection and fierceness.
