GUWAHATI: The Railway Ministry has approved the final location survey for a fresh railway line in Sikkim, connecting Melli to Dentam through Jorethang and Legship. Northeast Frontier Railway will undertake the survey at Rs 2.25 crore, according to an official release.
The initiative represents significant progress towards enhancing railway access to Sikkim's southern and western sectors.
The planned railway route seeks to address crucial infrastructure requirements by connecting distant towns such as Dentam, situated near the India-Nepal border at Chiwabhanjyang, to the country's rail network.
Initial feasibility assessments indicate the new line will span approximately 75 km, functioning as a strategic continuation of the
Sivok-Rangpo railway line currently under construction, with operations scheduled to begin by 2027.
Melli, a crucial entry point to southern and western Sikkim, is expected to function as a railway junction for the proposed extension, facilitating smooth regional integration with national transport infrastructure.

The statement released on Saturday indicated that this connectivity initiative would stimulate regional economic development, particularly in Gyalshing and adjacent regions, by improving accessibility, supporting tourism, facilitating trade and generating employment.
The authorities plan to issue work tenders for the survey implementation in the near future.
